The project “Berlengas – Sanctuary for Seabirds” arises within the scope of the Berlengas Monitoring and Conservation Programme, whose objective is to ensure the conservation of nesting seabird populations and the native flora of the Berlengas archipelago through the maintenance and improvement of the habitat. The initiative aims to continue the efforts of the LIFE Berlengas project (2014–2019) and to ensure the long-term sustainability of the actions implemented
Objectives
- Increase the quality and quantity of nests for seabirds, such as the Cory’s Shearwater (Calonectris borealis), the Band-rumped Storm-petrel (Hydrobates castro), the European Shag (Gulosus aristotelis), the Lesser Black-backed Gull (Larus fuscus) and the Yellow-legged Gull (Larus michahellis).
- Control the invasive Hotentot Fif (Carpobrotus edulis), which threatens native flora.
- Ensure the biosecurity of Berlenga Island, preventing the reintroduction of invasive mammals.
- Long-term monitoring of nesting seabirds and native flora.
- Engage volunteers, interns, and higher education students in our activities.
- Promote the natural values of the Berlengas archipelago.
